Yahoo! Health Features MediCompass

Award-winning service featured in the Yahoo! Diabetes Health Center allows those with diabetes to actively manage their condition online

Sunnyvale, CA & Carlsbad, CA - August 6, 2003 — Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) today announced a relationship with iMetrikus that will make iMetrikus' award-winning personal health management program, MediCompass, available to Yahoo! Health users. Available on Yahoo! Health starting today, MediCompass is a secure online system that empowers people with diabetes to take control and effectively monitor their condition. Developed by iMetrikus and based on advanced telehealth technologies, the MediCompass service is an important and effective service for consumers and health care professionals in the daily monitoring of diabetes, a chronic condition that affects millions. The launch of MediCompass coincides with the 30th Annual American Association of Diabetes Educators Meeting.

The MediCompass service allows users to record blood glucose levels, medications, daily activities and other relevant information gathered from their diabetes monitoring devices. Individuals can then read an analysis of their health status directly from their desktop and make the changes necessary to improve control of their diabetes. The system also allows users to share readings and other key information with their healthcare team securely and privately.

"Our relationship with iMetrikus allows Yahoo! users to get connected to the most advanced health management tools available, encouraging them to take charge of personal and family health concerns," said Tina Pang Mayer, general manager, Yahoo! Health. "This service, and similar ones to follow, represents a real commitment by Yahoo! Health to provide consumers with state-of-the-art tools for actively monitoring their health."

The MediCompass service works with commonly used personal diabetes monitoring devices like blood glucose monitors and insulin pumps. The service utilizes American Diabetes Association guidelines to educate members on important aspects of their diabetes health, and emphasizes the importance of daily blood glucose management.

Some of the specific features for the Yahoo! Health MediCompass system include:

  • Comprehensive tracking of health status
  • Easy to use reports and graphs
  • Personalized health action plans
  • Expert guidelines and resources
  • Information sharing with healthcare providers

The MediCompass diabetes monitoring system was awarded top honors in a survey conducted by The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Iowa. In results published in the April 2003 issue of "The Diabetes Educator," MediCompass earned the highest number of total points among 14 Web-based programs for providing the most effective, comprehensive and easy-to-use diabetes monitoring system.

"We are delighted to be working with Yahoo! Health to bring online personal health management to Yahoo! users," said Matt Sanders, chief executive officer, iMetrikus. "We share Yahoo! Health's commitment to help those with chronic health concerns become active participants with their caregivers in the daily management of their conditions. Together we hope to revolutionize how people monitor their health."

Yahoo! Health and iMetrikus plan to introduce additional condition-specific programs throughout 2003.
