Medicompass Receives Top Marks In
University Of Iowa Diabetes Management Study

Ease of Use, Security, Automatic Uploading, and
Comprehensiveness Highlighted

Carlsbad, CA, April 29, 2003The Diabetes Educator this week published the results of a new, far reaching evaluation of diabetes management software in which MediCompass placed at the top of all other Web-based programs. Conducted by the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Iowa, MediCompass received 20 out of a possible 22 points. MediCompass is iMetrikus' flagship product for patients and physicians to monitor and manage chronic conditions.

The study cited research indicating that computer-patient interactions lead to improved outcomes in diabetes management and "…could be an effective means of improving metabolic control." Programs were judged based on researchers' recommended content including logbook, vitals, labs, history, guidelines, communications in addition to other key factors such as ease of use and automatic uploading of blood glucose levels. Based on these criteria, MediCompass scored the highest of the 14 Web-based programs evaluated in the study.

"In addition to the elements highlighted in the study, my patients benefit from other MediCompass features," commented Timothy Bailey, MD, FACE, a San Diego endocrinologist and assistant clinical professor at UCSD. "Not only can we collect key metrics from 25 devices through a single system, the secure, shared record allows us to be more proactive in our patient's self management efforts."

"Our research indicates that patients and physicians are looking for more than static health information," commented Mark Bard, President of Manhattan Research, LLC, a healthcare marketing information and services firm. "There have been significant advances in the availability, quality, and security of programs that assist in the management of disease, and this evaluation gives people critical insight into which programs will work best for them."

Diabetes management programs have become increasingly important as healthcare organizations look for low-cost, readily available solutions to decrease the difficulty and skyrocketing cost associated with managing diabetes. MediCompass has already achieved proven results and market acceptance with broad deployment among patients and physicians, in addition to pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies launching disease management initiatives.

"When a patient and their healthcare provider choose to use a diabetes management system, it represents a commitment to improve the patient's quality of life," said Jae Evans, iMetrikus' President and CTO. "MediCompass can minimize the impact of chronic conditions so people with diabetes can spend less time managing their condition and more time enjoying an active lifestyle."

"Evaluation of Diabetes Management Software" was published in the March/April 2003 edition of The Diabetes Educator, the official publication of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (www.aadenet.org). It was authored by Jung-Yong Park, MD, MPH, and Jeannette M. Daly, RN, PhD, (jeannette-daly@uiowa.edu) from the Department of Family Medicine, University of Iowa.
